What to do if you can’t get your hands on hand sanitizer (don’t panic, there are better options!)

PLASTIC FREE, Skin, Uncategorized

“Do you do hand sanitizer?”

This has definitely been the number one question asked of us in the last couple of weeks for obvious reasons.

When we first saw the growing demand for hand sanitizer, we did seriously start looking into making it and we may still try and get something produced if we are able to source all the correct ingredients for the hand sanitizer to comply with WHO standards. There’s too many on the market that simply don’t work!

The issue we have is that it would be a product that stands out amongst our other products…. For example, we’d have to do a lot of experimentation to ensure that we use an appropriate emollient that doesn’t use palm oil. We suspect this will be difficult.

Bar soap is better!

The more we looked into it, the more we realised this was going to be difficult. The more we thought about it, the more we came to the conclusion that we already make a product that is recommended by doctors, chemists, etc as a superior line of defence to viruses. And that is good old-fashioned bar soap.

We’re the first to admit that bar soap has had a bad rap in the wider community over the years. Hopefully, we don’t have to go into too much on what makes our handmade soaps much better for you, your skin and the environment than the trusty bar of lux you probably grew up with. Encouragingly, bar soap has become more popular recently, thanks to the plastic free movement.

But bar soap is actually your best line of defence against germs. The reason: bar soap contains fat like substances that quite literally “loosen the glue” between a virus and your skin – meaning when used with water, you are literally washing away the germs.

And don’t take our word for it…

https://www.abc.net.au/news/health/2020-03-15/coronavirus-covid-19-handwashing-soap-sanitizer-advice/12051206

With a good bar of soap, you can actually feel this fatty layer coat your hands as you are washing.

But what about when you’re out and about?

The common question is what about when you are out and about and don’t have access to a basin. It’s a fair question. And obviously this is where hand sanitizer can help (just make sure though you are picking the right one: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-04-02/coronavirus-hand-sanitiser-may-not-be-effective/12110170?fbclid=IwAR27WPVhdK4NJAoHApnumKOm3nh-3YmhF7y3eSXFHyVzi__HxxEp3iLw8xw).

Just as effective is avoid touching your face, particularly your nose, mouth and eyes when out and about (it’s funny when you are conscious of this, you will actually stop doing it!). Also have a bar of soap on hand for when you do come across a bathroom (I’ve used this strategy for years and gotten used to the weird looks when I’ve pulled out my own bar of soap in the public toilets!) And of course, as soon as you get home wash your hands first thing.

And what about liquid soap?

Obviously liquid soap is also a good line of defence – and we’ve brought a few of our liquid soaps back in stock due to popular demand. Just be aware that most liquid soap – and we’re going to be frank with you about this – is mostly water.

One hot tip for those who prefer liquid soap instead of bar soap because they think it is less messy, why not put your bar soap in a container next to the sink and add a little bit of water…. and there’s your very own DIY liquid soap!

Happy handwashing!!

5 WAYS TO ACHIEVE NATURALLY GORGEOUS HAIR

PLASTIC FREE, shampoo, Skin

With the release of our NEW RANGE OF ALL NATURAL SHAMPOO we wanted to compile a list of The Australian Natural Soap Company’s favourite ways you can achieve NATURALLY gorgeous locks without harming yourself or the environment.

1. SWITCH TO A NATURAL SHAMPOO

We get asked about our natural bar shampoo ALL. THE. TIME in store – how to use it? Do you really NOT need conditioner? Will it make my hair greasy? Dry? Is it ok for a sensitive scalp? Is it good for dry hair? Oily hair? What if you have a combination, oily roots and dry ends?

Most people have found that after switching to our natural shampoo bar they have experienced more volume and body, faster growing hair, less dandruff, and (for my curly haired brothers and sisters) defined curls. HERE’S WHY – Natural shampoo bars do not contain harmful chemical and lathering agents that strip your hair of it natural oils (the reason you need to use conditioner in the first place) and could be the culprit to a dry itchy scalp, brittle hair and even hair loss, especially if you’re washing with these nasty chemicals daily!

We now have a shampoo bar for every hair type:

The Original

Shampoo for oily hair

Shampoo for dry hair

Shampoo for sensitive scalp

2. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER AND EAT YOUR VEGETABLES

I think we are all well aware of this one – our favourite hair happy foods are biotin full almonds, beta carotene rich sweet potatoes, and leafy green veggies that are high in Vitamin A!

3. NATURAL, VEGAN AND NO FUSS HAIR MASKS!

For hair happy healthy hair we recommend treating your locks to a moisture kick in the form of one ingredient hair masks!

NUTS FOR COCONUT MASK – What’s it good for? What isn’t it good for! Warm coconut oil and apply to your hair from top to bottom concentrating on your ends and leaving your roots if you are prone to oily hair. Cover with a warm towel or shower cap and leave on for 15-20 minutes.

LIQUID GOLD MASK – Otherwise known as argan oil. A few drops of this beautiful oil can help repair damage, and restore moisture to dry and brittle hair. Rub a few drops between your hands and distribute evenly on damp or dry hair, avoiding the roots and leave in all day.

I LOVE OLIVE MASK – Olive oil is rich in moisturising properties and is a wonderful heat protectant. Warm a couple of tablespoons and leave in your hair for 20-30 minutes before washing.

4. SNOOZE YOUR WAY TO SILKY STRANDS

Your hair and skin are a reflection of the anxiety and stress inside, so make it a point to get your eight hours every night – not only will you feel better because of it but you’ll look better too!

5. LET YOUR HAIR DRY NATURALLY

No surprises here, heat is a major factor for dry, brittle and breakage prone hair. We recommend letting your hair air dry whenever possible. Or if you do need to pull out the hair dryer or hot styling tool remember to use the low heat option and follow up the next day with an oil mask.

For those of you afraid of the dreaded PURGE, dun dun dun…

There will be a time when you are switching over from your chemical laced products to an all natural regime that many have dubbed the terrifying PURGE. It lasts between 1-6 weeks, depending on the person, and in that time your hair can flip flop from dry to oily and back again all in the space of a day. But after the purge, when the storm clouds have parted, you will be left with naturally gorgeous healthy hair that’s not only cheaper to maintain but also a wonderful way to cut back on environment destroying products and chemicals! It’s a win win WIN situation!
